A Scene  A pebble skidded down the dank tunnel.  Will clutched the stalagmite, wishing his sneakers had the traction of a 4 wheel drive.  Miniature streams trickled between his feet.  It was too wet and too steep.

He peered further down.  A misty fog had begun gathering near the bottom, masking his destination.  Whatever was down there might be his way out.  He had to go for it.

Will searched for another foothold or giant projection.  Something jutted out a few yards away.  He sat down and slid gently, grasping the bumpy ground to keep his slide under control.

After Reading Amiri Baraka

Notice the African spirit
breaks in the white dead eyes
of others.  Knows not what we
are, sees not who we are, feels not
why we fight.  Broken but black,
Martin Luther knows, sees,
and feels.  Why he is a King!
And kings keep their heads
among the clouds, having
reached their dreams.  Have we
reached our dreams?  Ask me not,
but notice the African spirit,
tiptoeing in the heart,
all until boom!  We break
and shatter the fetters
And then we stand
to see the world with black
eyes, alive
and strong.

A Very Important Guest  Briony groaned when the old door's hinges squeaked unhappily.  She peered out from underneath the covers.

"It's not even sunrise yet!"

"Get up!  Up, up, up, Brie-cheeks.  You should be ashamed!  Your brother was up an hour ago.  We have an important guest today."

Her sleepiness vanished instantly.  An important guest meant she was going to work in the kitchen today!  Anything was better than field chores.  Briony hopped out of bed and searched for the clothes she threw on the ground yesterday.

GOMLCrackcase: Opus Epic The morning of St. Valentine's Day

Aras Duval awakens this Sunday morning on the crooked table of his apartment, head planted on the coaster of the knocked-over coffee mug.  He sees the coffee stain and attempts to wipe it away, discovering that his fingers lift a dense layer of dust along with the coffee.  Aras blinks, and realizes his entire apartment is in a similar condition: junk upturned, furniture with more coffee stains, and all clothed in filmy dust.
